On Defending Against Ignorance

This past week, an old school colleague posted a comment online to the effect of (specifics kept as original)
How can dykes live with themselves? When did their disgusting sins become acceptable?
The person in question had, as far as I was aware, experienced a recent conversion to Christianity, from a life of bullying and violence to others. It would be fair to say that I was a little shocked at what I read, so I clarified what exactly she meant by dyke. Of course, it was what I'd feared - a lesbian.
Now I am not gay myself, but a large proportion of my close friends call themselves gay. My personal perspective is people are people and I shaln't label myself gay, straight, bisexual - if I like someone, I like them - regardless of gender.
I questioned the person's apparent ignorance on the origins of homosexuality, and mentioned I thought with her new found religious basis, her heart may have opened to variety, choice and peace within the World. Her reaction? Violence.
Apparently her entire church were placing a bounty on my head, sharpening the knives, and preparing a full blown biblical crucifixion for me. The hypocritical layers of this woman's mind know no bounds.
I am finding it hard to feel compassion for such a troubled soul, and would love some words of wisdom to help me on my way...if you'd be so kind...? :)
